Into Narration:
Almost everyone is a media maker of some sort in this day and age. Some people blog, some host a radio show and some dance.
Dance is one of the best ways to express yourself, to convey emotion. It allows you to communicate with your audience without words. It can be both traditional as well as contemporary. It has the ability to create and transform culture as it evolves.
Unfortunately, like in most form of media, gender stereotypes are very prevalent and representation is still problematic.
Ending Narration:
Dance, like all other forms of media, has a set of gender stereotypes which are very similar to ones present in today’s society. However, as we learned earlier, it also has its own standards of beauty. So how does one decide which standard to adhere to when one contradicts another? Is a petite form only beautiful if you are a dancer since society’s standard of beauty for a woman is tall with a large chest? Is it ok to think of a person as beautiful in one medium and not up to par in another? These are issues which are still problematic, but on a more positive note it is clear that dance has evolved over time and transformed into different forms that are more flexible and accepting of society’s values of today.
